Standard Manufacturer Short-Names
All companies engaged in the business of buying or selling board-level electronic components on the open market need a means of communicating the name of a component's manufacturer.
Often the manufacturer's legal name is too long to be used for practical reasons, and today search engine field-length limitations provide additional restrictions. Throughout the years independent distributors and brokers have used a variety of shortened names and abbreviations to represent the manufacturer's name.
While an abundance of information can be found in different places by searching the web, companies in the industry have been slow to take a leadership role to share their information in hope of establishing an industry standard.
As a result, both independent and franchised distributors who advertise the same component often use completely different shortened forms of the manufacturer's name. For example, a part manufactured by National Semiconductor Corporation may be advertised as having a manufacturer "NAT" by one distributor, while others use either "National" or "National Semi" with still others using the full company name or the abbreviation "NSC".
PCC offers it's list of component manufacturer names and abbreviations in the hope of helping the industry to develop industry standards that make the open market an easier and safer place to do business.
